Fashionably Forty

Fashion....it's kind of new to me. I've never considered myself anything close to a "fashionista" and to be honest, I've always envied my friends who naturally have a sense of style. It was perfect for me, then, to have a career in fitness that allowed me to wear cute yoga pants, Lulu skirts and fun tanks instead of street clothes. However, as my career is expanding beyond the gym and Lululemon I've found myself in need of some sense of style.

But here's my dilemma: I'm just a few months away from the big 4-0 (which, I am truly looking forward to with delight), am the mother of a gorgeous 18 year old (and her 3 younger siblings) and I still feel like I'm 25. So I'm kinda stuck, you see. I don't want people to think I'm confused and trying to dress like my 18 year old and at the same time, I cannot continue to dress in a black shirt and jeans or dark leggings all the time. But I don't even know where to start. Which always leads me back to Lulu.

So what's the key to being stylish and fashion forward when you're "flirting with forty"?

I think it's perfectly acceptable to dress the age you feel. I want to dress like I could be 25 but I want to make sure I don't cross the line of "trying to look too young". In my mind, this would look like Daisy Dukes with the pockets hanging out the bottom...just a little young. Or anything that leaves checks hanging out on the backside. We, as "flirting with forties" are too classy for that.

Keep it classy...make sure your clothes aren't too tight or too loose. If you've recently lost weight and you can barely keep your pants up, it's time to go shopping! If you've put on a few pounds, do yourself a favor and buy yourself a few pretty but inexpensive pieces that make you feel good instead of trying to force something that doesn't fit. This will help boost your confidence too! Regardless of our size, we deserve to feel beautiful!

The drape-y look is in style right now which I LOVE and works well for women of every size. It's so flattering to pair something like the Sweet Layers tunic with leggings or skinny jeans. Tunics and leggings are one of my favorite combos because I can dress them up and still feel comfy at the same time.

My daughter loves my clothes. I often add a new piece to my wardrobe and when I show her she says..."I would totally wear that." (Not so fast, missy!) I do love when she says that because it makes me feel like I'm still trendy, I'm still dressing the way I feel inside. And that's the most important thing: let your outside reflect all that is amazing and special about the inside of you!
